This years’ ASM of the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology and the NZNO Gastroenterology Nurses Section was hosted in Dunedin by the University of Otago and the Gastroenterology Unit at Dunedin Hospital. Against all odds, Dunedin proved to be a popular destination. Almost 400 doctors, nurses and scientists attended three days packed with presentations ranging from basic scientific topics to state-of-the-art lectures on clinical matters. Seven international speakers from Europe, the US and Australia gave the meeting a truly international flair and provided an insight into how things are being done elsewhere. Clearly the highlight of any ASM is the conference dinner and this year was no exception. In typical ASM style a Scottish banquet was held at Larnach Castle and once the haggis was hunted down the party started. Scottish smurfs, beautiful maidens, bravehearts and knights seemed to have a good time and there are rumours that some were sighted in the early morning hours in the Octagon. A big thank you goes to all the organisers, exhibitors, speakers and attendees who helped make this a great conference.
